Tinder Off-Duty: How we use our PTO & Wellness Days

In addition to PTO, our Tinder Team has 10 Wellness Days per year to take a mental break from work, disconnect, and recharge. We sat down with Tyler (Analytics Manager), Leah (Recruiting Lead), and Megan (UX Research Manager) to learn more about how they choose to spend that time.
Tyler snowboarding in Aspen, Colorado.

Share with us your favorite vacation (or activity) that you have taken/done while you were on PTO. What made it special?

Tyler: My favorite activity if snowboarding. I love adventure and travel, enjoy nature, exercise, and speed! With snowboarding, I spend the day on a mountain and in the forest, seeing spectacular views and landscapes, floating on powder, or flying down a run going 50 miles an hour. It makes me feel alive! Snowboarding is a great way to explore and relax, and I return to work with tremendous energy.

How do you unwind & unplug when you take PTO?

Tyler: I disconnect fully from work when I take PTO. I go somewhere far from my home city, make a clear plan, and pack the days with activities.

How has Tinder supported your work-life balance?

Tyler: The unlimited PTO at Tinder is generous. We also have a culture that supports people taking time off to recharge. I noticed that time off is fully respected by others. I don't get urgent tasks when I'm on vacation. I like the no-meeting Wednesday, too; it helps reduce stress from meeting-heavy days and promotes a flexible schedule and healthy balance.

What would you do if you could take a year off of work? Where would you go?

Tyler: If I could take a year off of work, I would move to a country in Asia - for example, Japan or Korea - and learn a new language there.

Leah: Recently I went paddle boarding in Malibu and stayed in Topanga Canyon. It was a wonderful experience exploring the local coffee shops and hiking the remote trails. Not only was paddle boarding a great workout, but connecting with nature by seeing the starfish and dolphins left me feeling rejuvenated.

How do you unwind & unplug when you take PTO?

Leah: Taking time to unwind and unplug is so essential to do impactful work. I always leave a day or two between traveling because traveling can be stressful. I also enjoy carving out time to journal, meditate, and read!

How has Tinder support your work-life balance?

Leah: Tinder has proven they genuinely value work-life balance by encouraging time off, providing wellness days, and also understanding personal commitments that may come up.

What would you do if you could take a year off of work? Where would you go?

Leah: If I could take a year off of work, I would spend that time making more core memories with my family at home! Nothing beats a good family activity like cooking together or doing fun DIY projects at home. I would also plan an extended vacation.

Share with us your favorite vacation (or activity) that you have taken/done while you were on PTO. What made it special?

Megan: I traveled a lot for work and recreation, but due to the pandemic, it has been a while. But I haven’t let that stop me from taking time off to unwind, which is so important.

These days I love to do small stay-cations and local activities in and around LA to relax. My favorite thing is taking my dog out to the beach or on a hike; we sometimes stop for ice cream after (and yes, he gets some too).

How do you unwind & unplug when you take PTO?

Megan: I love to explore new places, whether it's a town I haven't been to before or a new trail or beach I've yet to explore. Being outside and exploring something new always makes me feel more refreshed.

How has Tinder supported your work-life balance?

Megan: I have always had the support from my team to take time off when I need to. Whether that's because I need a wellness day after a particularly grueling week, some time off to fly home to spend time with my family, or time off to completely unplug and take a trip - it has always been supported. Taking time to unwind is essential, and I pay that forward with my team.

What would you do if you could take a year off of work? Where would you go?

Megan: I have a life goal of visiting all of the US National Parks. I've visited 17, so I'd probably see the remaining 46!
